Chucks for a Rainy Day
In case you haven’t heard, Typhoon Lando is coming to town, promising more rain than your garden-variety storm. If you’re fool enough to go out while he’s dumping water on our poor country, then may we suggest donning a pair of these new Rubber Chucks?
Officially, they’re called Converse Chuck Taylor All Star Rubber, but you could be forgiven for calling them Rubber Chucks. Designed to help keep your feet dry far better than the other Chuck Taylor collections, these kicks are made from water repellent canvas-backed rubber material, impervious to rain and mud. The tongue is gussetted, meaning it is stitched along the shoe’s eyelets. This makes it harder for water to seep into the shoe. No medial eyelets either, a trade off between keeping your feet ventilated versus keeping them dry. Wool lining inside the shoe keeps your toes warm and snug.
There are four colorways available locally: Casino Red, Gloom Green, Converse Black and Thunder Grey. All four feature a two-tone color combo between the upper and the midsole, unlike last year’s Rubbers which were monochrome. A fifth colorway, Cyan Space, isn’t available here, though they look pretty awesome.
Frankly speaking, there aren’t very many stylish options for men when it comes to footwear for wet conditions. Hiking boots are too clunky and only fishermen and DPWH workers can rock a pair of rubber wellingtons. These Rubber Chucks – and only these – fill that particular void in our shoe closet.
Converse Chuck Taylor All Star Rubber retails for PhP3,350 at Converse stores and other select stores.
